STERLING, Va. – A woman is dead and a Loudoun County Sheriff’s deputy was wounded after responding to a call of disorderly conduct at a Sterling-area Costco store.
Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Liz Mills said the shooting occurred about 3 p.m. Wednesday. The deputy had been called to respond to a disorderly conduct complaint.
Authorities say the woman was a food demonstrator at the Costco who began behaving erratically.
Deputies were called to the warehouse store by employees.
When deputies arrived, Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman says the woman threatened his deputies with a knife and scissors.
Deputies did try to subdue the woman with a taser at first, but it didn’t work, Chapman says.
One deputy opened fire, killing the woman. The other deputy was hit in the leg by friendly fire.
Mills said the shooting scene has now been determined to be safe and secure, and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Further details about the deputy’s injuries were unavailable.
